12 Women Fertility Foods
In honor of International Women’s Day, I would like to write about women and the foods that increase their fertility. For many centuries, women have been child bearers. Without women and the amazing strength that they have, none of us would be there, and in that light, it is important to show appreciation to all the wonderful women that we come across on a day-to-day basis. With all of that being said, I have done a bit of research over the past five days, and I was able to gather some of the foods that boost fertility in women. If you are a woman and are trying to conceive, look no further than this list.
Whole Milk
Choosing dairy is definitely a smart and healthy way to go when you are trying to get pregnant. It has a lot of calcium, which is excellent for bone strength and reproduction. Drinking one serving of whole milk a day can do amazing things for your fertility. If you are lactose intolerant, fret not as you can find a healthy amount of fertility-friendly calcium in foods like leafy greens and tofu as well.
Chicken
Lean protein is another smart, health-conscious way to boost fertility. It is important to remember to mix in ample iron intake with leans proteins. You can get iron in the form of leafy greens, or even supplements to complement the lean protein. Remember that too much protein could actually lead to weight gain, and that is a definite no-no when you are trying to boost fertility.
Whole Grains
Complex carbs are important for fertility as well because of their folic acid nutrients. Whole grains offer nutrients in the form of complex carbohydrates which can also be found in vegetables, beans, and fruits. It also offers a refreshing alternative to refined carbohydrates (white rice and white bread), which tend to be bad for reproduction in the long run. Whole grains regulate your hormones and give you a stable ovulation cycle, which promotes fertility.
Salmon
Many women have a fishy feeling (see what I did there?) about eating salmon when they are in the process of trying to have a baby, but there is no need to feel this way because foods such as sardines, salmon, and herring are amazing fertility boosters. They have omega manganese components in them which help to regulate stress, increase the flow of blood to reproductive organs, as well as regulate reproductive hormones. You can also talk to your doctor about supplements that are rich in omega 3 if you are allergic to any of the listed foods.
Oysters
Oysters are not just good for reproduction alone, they are also excellent sources of zinc, and zinc is a must when you’re trying to conceive (a deficiency of this nutrient in the body can affect your cycle and prompt slow egg-production). If you don’t particularly enjoy oysters, opt for other zinc-filled foods like lean beef and poultry, dairy, whole grains (all of which you should already be eating anyway!), nuts, eggs, and legumes. After consulting with your doctor, pick a prenatal vitamin that has zinc in it as well.
Read Raspberry Leaf Tea
This helps to tone the uterine lining of your uterus and prepares it for labor. It also contains essential vitamins and minerals such as Vitamin A, Vitamin E, Calcium, and Phosphorus among many others, which make conception a lot easier. Raspberry Leaf Tea comes in various forms. You can get it at a store in the pre-packaged bags and also in capsule form.
Pineapple
This is another essential fertility food. Because it is a blood thinner, it actively helps to increase blood flow to the uterus. With increased blood flow to the uterus, implantation is likely going to happen, and this could get you on your way to conceiving a child. Pineapple contains an essential enzyme called bromelain which also serves as an anti-inflammatory agent as well as a pain reliever. For best results, eat mainly organic pineapples.
Dark Chocolate
Dark chocolate also contains a healthy amount of zinc which helps to promote hormonal balance and increase your chances of conception. Dark chocolate also has flavonoids and arginine which can help to elevate your mood; as well as increase blood flow to your uterus and ovaries, and this also increases your chances of conceiving as blood flow to sex organs is increased. In its natural state which is raw cacao beans, dark chocolate contains zinc, potassium, manganese, and potassium to name a few. It also acts as an anti-depressant because of its high serotonin levels.
Green Tea
This one is my personal favorite on this list simply because of it is such a hardworking lifestyle supplement. Because green tea does not contain any caffeine, it helps the reproductive eggs in a woman’s body to properly mature. A lot of women do not get enough fluids and water during the day, therefore their bodies don’t produce enough cervical fluid known as cervical mucus that can help sperm travel through the reproductive tract to the egg. This is where green tea can be highly beneficial because it helps hydrate the body so that it can be ready to make enough cervical mucus that the female body needs to get pregnant with ease.
Berries
Raspberries and blueberries work wonders for boosting fertility in women, but other berries, like strawberries and blackberries, will work too. They are high in antioxidants, which shields female cells from aging and damaging (including reproductive cells like eggs). If they are out of season, simply buy them frozen.
Citrus Fruits
Vitamin C is amazing. I love vitamin C. Not only are oranges, grapefruits, and other citrus fruits one of the best sources for vitamin C, they are also fully loaded with potassium, calcium, and folate which is a B vitamin that can help you get pregnant by regulating ovulation as well as creating a healthy environment for eggs. If you are trying to conceive, you should aim to eat or drink at least one serving of citrus fruit each day ( for example, you could try a medium-size grapefruit, a large orange, two clementines or one kiwi fruit) in addition to another serving of fruits.
Greek Yogurt
When you are trying to conceive, it is always going to be a wise choice to stick to high-fat dairy foods. One serving of high-fat dairy foods is more than enough to help you on your journey, so don’t forget to grab a container of Greek yogurt on your way out to work every morning. Not only does Greek yogurt contain more calcium than milk, it is also packed full of probiotics and has about two to three times more protein than a regular cup of yogurt. It is also a good source of vitamin D, which helps the follicles in your ovaries to mature, and it strengthens bones and boosts immunity. If you have any personal reservations about yogurt, still aim for about 1,000 mg of calcium a day. You can get this through full-fat milk, cheese and other dairy-rich foods. Be careful not to consume too much high fat though, as this could end up negatively affecting your fertility efforts.
Lastly…
Information is power. It is amazing what you can achieve just by knowing, doing and eating the right things. Our bodies and routines are all different, so if any one of these foods do not work for you, mix and match things up until you find the perfect balance for yourself. Exercise and good sleep are also absolutely important.
